FCO | Not set | HMG2802 | Know before You Go | In 2014/15 the FCO provided consular assistance to 17,000 British nationals overseas, issued 37,000 emergency travel documents and received nearly 0.5 million consular enquiries. Prevention activity through KBYG is an important part of our consular work, helping to reduce the number of 'preventable' cases (e.g. arrests, hospitalisations) and give people the information and tools to self-help where possible. This allows our staff to focus on those who need our help most and supports the Foreign Secretary's priority of encouraging greater personal responsibility among British nationals overseas. Our agency contract, at £558,000 per year, accounts for just 1.6% of direct expenditure on consular services (£35.5 million in 2015/16). Our prevention work through the KBYG campaign contributes to the FCOs foreign policy priority of supporting British nationals around the world through modern and efficient consular services. This work is only growing in importance, with prevention a key strand of the 2016-2020 FCO consular strategy. | £500,000 | Mar-16 |
